Hyphen

A dialogue between a dancing performer and an atrificial intelligence, February 2020

About

Hyphen is a performance illustrating a dialogue between a performer and an artificial intelligence. Our team explored the relationship between human and machine explicitly, with very little artifice.

Tech details

Our main challenge was to translate information from body movement into english text. This was done using body tracking and a machine learning algorithm which matches dance moves to phrases from dataset of 500 entries. Softwares used: TouchDesigner, Ableton Live. The core app was written in Javascript using the library ml5 and APIs such as Pandorabot, Google Text-to-Speech and Google translate.

Credits

This installation was made during a 4-days artist residency at the Petit Théâtre du Vieux Noranda and part of my curiculum at UQAT University. It was later re-enacted at the 2020 Avantage Numérique forum. Our team was constituted of 6 students – Adrien Demuth, Gaston Gougeon, Justignin Brouillat, Lise Deville, William Magaud, myself and the performer, Audrey Rochette
